TO
DANCE, TO FLY
(U.S.A.)
Oil on Canvas - 40"
x 32"
| This young boy is a Grass Dancer. The regalia
of Grass Dancers consists of long yarn fringe and ribbons that
hang from their shoulders, waist and legs, and they wear no bustle.
They wear beaded headbands and a warrior’s head roach on
their heads. As they weave and dip, the long fringe waves like
the grasses of the prairie swaying in the wind. The dance emulates
trying to stomp down the long buffalo grass. This young Grass
Dancer was a very energetic dancer, and it was the shadow beneath
his feet that seemed to give him the ability to soar when he
danced. As I observed him, it was as though an eagle was at his
feet, giving him strength and power. |
