This gentleman is of the Yanktonai Dakota Tribe, and he is from Montana. His name is Robert Red Elk, and he is the brother of Greg Red Elk, “Honor”. Robert is a traditional dancer. This painting was an award winner at the Chautauqua Center for the Visual Arts in New York. Some see his image as frightening, but I see it as powerful and beautiful. I encountered him at a Salmon Homecoming Powwow. It was such a perfect face painting – art within art – and he holds the peyote fan with great power and strength.
