This gentleman is Robert Red Elk of the Yanktonai Dakota Tribe in Montana. He is the brother of Greg Red Elk (“Honor”). Robert is a Traditional Dancer. This painting was an award winner at the Chautauqua Center for the Visual Arts in New York. Some see this image as frightening, but I see it as powerful and beautiful. I encountered him at a Salmon Homecoming Powwow. It was such a perfect face painting – art within art – and he holds the peyote fan with great power and strength.
