(Philippines)
Oil
Pastel on Paper • 19" x 15"
| She is a young
Aeta girl from a village in the Philippines called Pamulaklakin
located in the hills by Subic Bay, which was a U.S. military base
that was quite suddenly evacuated by the U.S. in 1991. Her shyness
and reluctance to be approached by a stranger were part of her charm.
When I told the interpreter that I wanted to paint her, he had a
brief conversation with her mother. Her mother then quickly took
her into their hut, and within moments she returned in this lovely,
yet worn, white dress. There was tremendous happiness in her mother’s
eyes, but the little girl remained reluctant. While she warmed up
to me a bit, it was this image that captured my heart. |
